Columns are cabinetry as much as appliance

A column is a single-purpose tower: all refrigerator, or all freezer, dressed with a custom panel so it reads as part of the kitchen rather than as a machine. Two of them side by side is the common arrangement in the newer Mandarin kitchens, and a single refrigerator column plus a freezer drawer stack turns up in remodels where the original opening was never wide enough for a full built-in.

The consequence is that a column has two lives at once. It is a refrigeration appliance, with the same evaporator fans, defrost cycles and sealed systems as any other, and it is also a piece of joinery that has to stay square inside a wooden opening. Most of the calls we take on columns are about the second life, not the first.

Doors that have gone out of true

The panel is heavy, the hinge carries it, and the whole assembly is bolted into a cabinet that moves with the seasons. A door that has drifted shows itself in a predictable order: first the reveal at the top or bottom edge stops being even, then the gasket stops making full contact along one side, then you start finding condensation on the panel edge or a light film of frost just inside the compartment. By the time the alarm is chiming because the door has not fully closed, the misalignment has usually been visible for months.

This is worth catching early because it is cheap to fix early. Alignment, hinge adjustment and a gasket that has taken a set are ordinary work. A gasket that has been running warm and wet for two summers is a replacement, and a compartment that has been quietly ingesting humid air all that time will have put extra hours on the compressor as well.

Icing around a freezer column’s drawers

Freezer columns are drawer-based, and drawers are harder to seal than a door because the seal runs on four sides and the basket loads it unevenly. When a freezer column starts icing up, the pattern tells you where to look. Frost concentrated at the front edge of a drawer points at the seal or the drawer alignment. Frost on the back wall, evenly spread, points at the defrost cycle. Ice in the base of the cabinet under the lowest basket usually means the drain has frozen shut and the meltwater from each defrost has nowhere to go.

Mandarin’s summers make all of this worse in the same way. The dew point sits high from June into September, and every second the seal is imperfect is a second the compartment is being fed damp air. The ice you see is that humidity, condensed and frozen where it landed.

Panels, sensors and controls

When a touch panel goes dark or stops responding, the useful question is whether the compartment is still holding temperature. A column that is dark but still cold has a control or display problem. A column that is dark and warming has lost power or has a board fault, and those are two different repairs.

Before you call, check the breaker. Kitchens in the older Mandarin houses were not wired for an appliance run of this size, and remodels here often ended up sharing a circuit that a modern column would not be given today. A column that trips a breaker intermittently, especially in the afternoon when the air conditioning is cycling hard, is telling you something about the circuit rather than about itself.

How we approach a column

We measure before we touch anything: compartment temperature at more than one height, the reveal around the door, and the current the unit is drawing. Columns are heavy and they are trimmed into cabinetry that costs more than the appliance, so pulling one forward is a last step and not a first one. A great many column complaints are settled at the hinge, the gasket, the drain or the fan without the unit ever leaving its opening.
